Winning Ways: “The Bath of Baptism”

At 61, Sam Houston became a believer and submitted to baptism in Rickey Creek. Cynical friends asked the dripping-wet Texas hero if he felt his sins had now been washed away. “Yes,” said Houston, “and God help the fish down below!”

We’re scheduling baptism in this Sunday’s worship services, so let me know if you’re ready to take this step of Christian obedience.

It’s interesting how we humans

Winning Ways: “A Perfect THEM Day!”

Our Connection Celebration Sunday is a few weeks away. It’s a perfect day to bring a THEM.

As you know, we’re calling 12,000 households within 3 miles of our church building to invite those who are not involved in a church to visit us on Sunday, October 14. We hope to “connect” with 200 households on that day: that’s why we’re calling this our “Connection Campaign.”

In addition to all those

Winning Ways: “Wreck the Roof!”

Are you willing to wreck a roof to get people to Jesus? Before we go any further in our Connection Campaign, we better have an answer to that question.

At the end of the first week of our Connection Campaign, 55 households told us they’d like to come to our Open House on October 14. Eighty-one other households expressed interest and wanted more information. We also gave 328 requests to our

Winning Ways: “The Lesson of the Seagull”

Jesus can help us overcome what overcomes us. But learn the lesson from a foolish seagull and don’t wait too long to ask for help.

Matthew recounted a story of Christ’s complete control over a force of demons that completely controlled two men (8:28-34). Read this report and gain confidence that Christ can overcome the things that overcomes you. Whatever addiction or sinful attraction overpowers

Do you simply respect Jesus, or do you revere him? The difference impacts your ability to face your fears.

The disciples discovered this on the night they were caught out in the open sea on a little boat. They woke up Jesus in a panic, shouting, “Lord, we’re going to drown!”

Jesus made his way to the bow and said to the wind and waves, “Be quiet.” It was as if our Lord regarded this violent

Winning Ways: “An Anchor for the Soul”

The Anchor Course is a place where spiritual seekers can discover the meaning of Christianity and believers can develop their understanding of the faith. If one of those descriptions fits you, come join us!

After our Spring semester, here’s what a participant wrote me:

“Coming from another faith, I wanted to explore what Christianity means. The Anchor Course was a wonderful, intelligent, and

Hollywood gets it more than you realize. Your marriage relationship will be better if you get it, too.

I’m talking about the profound differences between what men and women fundamentally need in a relationship. The romances in popular films aren’t just “love stories”–they’re “respect stories,” too! In Aladdin, the boy hero asks Jasmine, “Do you trust me?” She says “Yes,” takes his hand, and

We should make the same commitment to God that David made: “I will honor you as long as I live!” (Psalm 63:4, NLT.)

And that’s why we should improve our church facility.

“Wait a minute,” you say, “What do bricks and carpet and paint have to do with honoring God?” In Haggai, God actually says we should pay attention to the building where his Name is worshipped and where his Word is studied. God

Most of us have seen Gone with the Wind. Some of us have read the book. Did you know the novel was based on real people?

In real life, Scarlett wasn’t an O’Hara, though: Her real name was Emelyn Louise Hannon. And Rhett wasn’t a Butler: His real name was Rhett Turnipseed.

I guess you can see why his name was changed–uh, with all due respect to any Turnipseeds who may be reading this!

Rhett

Winning Ways: Make the Right Choice

“There are three kinds of people in the world,” a friend likes to say. “There are those who can count and those who can’t.”

And he’s an accountant.

Jesus said there are just two kinds of people in the world: those who follow him and those who don’t. Your choice between those two groups has serious consequences here and hereafter.

We’re reluctant to reduce our entire world down to just two
